Following a fruitful era heading Americana rockers The Band, Robbie Robertson embarked on a solo career in the mid-’80s that saw him push past his previous work into more varied sounds. “Night Parade” turns a roots-rock tune into pulsing pop. On “Fallen Angel”, Robertson pays tribute to former bandmate Richard Manuel and illuminates his new path with lush electronic atmospheres and vocal contributions from Peter Gabriel. And “In the Blood” turns his fondness for dense instrumentation into smoky vibes with heavy, throbbing rhythms inspired by Indigenous Canadian music. After decades spent exploring his roots beyond The Band and producing and composing film scores for many of Martin Scorsese’s films, Robertson died in August 2023 at the age of 80.
