Mardi Gras Party: Lustrous Lair

Mardi Gras Party: Lustrous Lair

“Music is a site of transitioning. Queer clubs are a portal to utopia,” Simona Castricum tells Apple Music. “It’s where we forge our underground. It’s where we realise our futurity—to perform our identity, to seek connection, to build community. As we dance upon the cusp of resistance and pleasure, we are world-builders.” The DJ and producer’s words accompany Lustrous Lair, one of five official Mardi Gras Party playlists. Had pandemic restrictions not forced the event’s cancellation, Lustrous Lair would’ve been the go-to spot for all things techno and deep house. Still, it doesn’t mean the party can’t carry on at home, and the DJs meant to perform on the night have created these playlists instead. Each of the five spaces were designed to have distinct themes, vibes and genres, and each playlist represents one of those spaces. Alongside Castricum, longtime Sydney DJ Feisty co-created this playlist. “I was super excited about playing in that dark and shiny techno bunker,” she says. “I love driving, powerful techno, punctuated with vocal stabs, layers of melody and just the right amount of drama, so my set was all about feasting away on those sexy beats. I hope this playlist reflects that. I’m also a big fan of lighting, so I tend to keep that in mind when choosing tracks. So close your eyes and imagine we’re there together, no matter where you are today. Wishing you a delicious Mardi Gras.” Feel the beats of Lustrous Lair—and make sure to check out the other four official playlists.
