Engineer-turned-entertainer João Bosco exported the carnival sambas and choros of his Minas Gerais homeland to Brazil's musical mainstream. Psychiatrist-turned-lyricist Aldir Blanc added poetry to Bosco's fine guitar playing and sophisticated melodies, and the result is stunning sambas, jazzy bossa nova, protest anthems ("O Bêbado e a Equilibrista", or "The Drunkard and the Equilibrist", became an Amnesty International theme) and numerous streetwise slices of life.
