Henri Salvador entertained generations of French fans over a 70-year career with his sensitive singing style and exuberant wit. Born in French Guiana, Salvador was many things: a silken-voiced chanteur ("I don't sing, I whisper," he said) credited with inspiring Antônio Carlos Jobim to invent bossa nova in Brazil; a rock ‘n' roll pioneer down with both the blues and beguine; and a novelty-track genius known for his infectious laughter (and songs about Zorro and dental assistants). Salvador latched on to every musical craze that came along while having the time of his life.
