Born Jheison Falide de Souza in Rio de Janeiro state, Ferrugem grew up with a samba singing mother and a love of the style, buying a tantã drum at 13 to teach himself the genre’s gentle rhythms. His viral breakthrough was 2015’s “Climatizar”, with its sprightly classical guitar and lively percussion centring Ferrugem’s rich R&B-evoking voice. “Você e eu” builds up to a buoyant climax, where twin guitars are enlivened by his awesome falsetto and precise drumming, and “Atrasadinha” approaches boy band-style love balladry, refined by romantic guitar plucking and a soaring backing vocal chorus.
