Eric Dolphy Essentials

Eric Dolphy's unique voice on alto saxophone, bass clarinet and flute comprised an approach to harmony and intervals that might be described as a hybrid of 20th-century classical concepts and Charlie Parker's bop innovations. He made his first major recordings in 1958 with the Chico Hamilton Quintet, later working with Oliver Nelson, Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane. In February 1964, Dolphy recorded Out to Lunch!, considered his masterwork, for Blue Note. Soon afterward he joined Charles Mingus for a European tour and decided to settle in Europe, but passed away just a few months later.
