Crystal Castles Essentials

It's fitting that Crystal Castles named themselves after a video game—listening to their music feels like stepping into a world with its own atmosphere and rules. On the duo's 2008 debut, it's hard to say which is icier: Ethan Kath's 8-bit synths or Alice Glass' processed moan. Across two more LPs they explored aching electro-goth (their cover of Platinum Blonde's "Not In Love") and frostbitten trap that pairs brittle 808 drums with arctic trance stabs ("Affection"). Following Glass' departure, new singer Edith Frances brought a similarly haunting presence to the apocalyptic EDM of "Deicide".
