Inventive and influential progressive jazz chamber group Oregon was formed in 1970 from the nucleus of the Paul Winter Consort. Originally comprising Ralph Towner, Collin Walcott, Glen Moore, and Paul McCandless, their music explored the boundaries of jazz using uniquely disparate influences from classical, folk, Indian, and other ethnic music. Walcott's 1984 death in a car accident, dictated recruiting Walcott’s friend Trilok Gurtu as percussionist. After three well-received albums for ECM during the mid-'80s, they moved to Intuition. Gurtu's departure in 1992 influenced the recording of 1994’s Troika as a trio. They eventually hired Mark Walker as a permanent drummer. They debuted for the CAM Jazz label with the excellent Prime in 2006. 2012's Family Tree was the final album to include Moore, who retired. 2017's Lantern marked the debut of bassist Paolino Dalla Porta, while 2021 saw the release of 1974, an archival Berlin concert by the original quartet.
