About Murlo

Murlo is the musical alias of Chris Pell, a producer and illustrator residing in London but originally from East Midlands. Associated with the U.K. grime scene, his tracks are bright and festive, displaying a heavy influence of soca, dancehall reggae, bassline, and other dancefloor-friendly styles, but also having a slight bit of an introspective, melancholy feel. Murlo first appeared as a remix artist, reworking tracks by Cold Pumas in 2009, Water Borders in 2010, and Slackk in 2011, among others. He then began releasing EPs of his original material, starting with 2011's Nectah 004 (Pollinate Records) and followed by 2012's Quartz EP (Lowup Records). The year 2013 saw releases on Unknown to the Unknown (Adder) and Glacial Sound (Last Dance EP), and a collaboration with Famous Eno ("Ariel") on the Mixpak label. By the time of 2014's Plume EP in collaboration with JT the Goon (Oil Gang) and Into Mist EP (Rinse), his music had shed many of the overt references to Caribbean music, but it still remained colorful and expressive. In 2015, Murlo released "Jasmine," a pop-leaning single with vocalist Gemma Dunleavy. He then spent much of the year touring North America and Asia before delivering the eight-track Odyssey EP, featuring the single "Moodswing." Two years later he returned with another EP, Club Coil, featuring more collaborations with Dunleavy. Also included on the EP was the single "Tired of You." ~ Paul Simpson
