About Momo Dieng

Momo Dieng is a Senegalese singer known for his smooth tenor vocals and vibrant, often romantic Afro-pop style. The son of late Orchestra Baobab member Ndiouga Dieng, Momo came into his own with 2017's Lang gui and its 2019 follow-up, Cey li. Born in Dakar to a musical family, Momo's grandmother Ndèye Ngom Bambilor was widely known as a traditional singer and his father Ndiouga Dieng rose to fame in the '70s and '80s as lead singer of the internationally acclaimed Orchestra Baobab. Even his older brother Alpha Dieng is a notable presence in Senegal's music scene, and Momo first began his career as a teenager singing backing vocals for him. After studying music at the School of Fine Arts, he put together a band of like-minded musicians and began singing his own music. Combining warm, romantic pop with Mbalax dance and Afro-beat styles, he independently released the 2015 single "Li ngama diaral" before signing with prominent Senegalese label Prince Arts, which issued his 2017 debut album Lang gui. Both the title-track single and the album itself were a success and Dieng followed it two years later with a second album, Cey li. ~ Timothy Monger
