A folk-rock family band based out of Los Angeles, California, Miner's winning blend of indie folk, country, and Americana has drawn comparisons to contemporaries like the Lumineers, the Avett Brothers, and Fleet Foxes. Founded by husband and wife Justin and Kate Miner, and featuring the talents of Justin's brother Jeremy Miner and drummer Tobias Urbanczyk, the group first burst onto the scene in 2014 with the self-produced Into the Morning, which included the hit SoundCloud and Hype Machine single "Hey Love." The album caught the ear of producer Phil Ek (the Shins, Modest Mouse, Band of Horses), who agreed to take on the fledgling quartet's much anticipated sophomore long-player, but some bad news from home soon put the brakes on Miner's upward trajectory. Kate's mother had been diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease, and the genetic nature of the neurodegenerative condition meant that Kate and her two sisters had a 50-percent chance of being carriers themselves. After a stressful and complicated series of tests, Kate received the bittersweet news that while she was free of the genetic markers for the disease; her sisters were not. During this time, Justin and Kate continued to write, and the ordeal helped to shape the songs that would eventually make up their next record. Both understandably melancholic and resoundingly hopeful, the resulting Tuanaki, named for a vanished archipelago in the South Pacific, was released in 2016. ~ James Christopher Monger
