About Matt Kivel

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. My brother and I went to Truetone music in Santa Monica and we didn't have any money. For an hour, we had them pull out guitar pedals and we tried each one with glee. Then at one point the guy called us "tire kickers" and banned us forever. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Azusa Plane, Where the Sands Turn to Gold Cob, Moyshe McStiff and the Tartan Lancers of the Sacred Heart Dakota Oak, Am Deister These are 3 beautiful and overlooked albums that mean a great deal to me. C.O.B landed on some type of folk/drone alchemical perfection; Dakota Oak is just glistening, pastoral warmth; and Azusa Plane is metallic ennui with some strange hope inside. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Insignificance” I remember playing a bunch of demos for my friend Olivia and she really liked this one and told me I needed to record it properly. Lyrics and melody just seemed to fit correctly. During his speech at my wedding, my brother quoted this song. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? I was waiting by the pool table at Sagebrush in Austin. This really drunk guy was kind of following me around and it seemed like he wanted to murder me. It freaked me out. When I finally got on stage to play, he and a friend started dancing joyfully. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I would like to make a very loud and noisy album that is super abrasive and dissonant that just rips.
