About Maryla Rodowicz

b. Poland. By the mid-90s singer Maryla Rodowiz had become one of Poland’s most popular rock/pop exports, scoring consistent chart success in the domestic charts. Formerly a member of rock band Rózowe Czuby, with whom she sang in a variety of styles including dance, new wave and hip-hop, her solo work has encompassed traditional Gypsy songs and children’s lullabies in addition to pop. Since her career began in the 60s, she has become Poland’s most popular singer, achieving a string of awards and numerous hit singles. She is also a genuine entertainer - her live shows in the 90s followed a ‘gold’ theme, with her self-designed gold clothing (in which all her stage musicians were also dressed) making a distinctive impression on her frequent live and television appearances. The album which accompanied these appearances, 1995’s Zlota Maryla (‘Gold Maryla’), produced two further hit singles, ‘Najwieksza Milosc, Najciezszy Grzech’ (‘The Greatest Love, The Greatest Sin’) and ‘Dworzec’ (‘The Station’). Her Polish-language lyrics were written for her by a collective of writers and musicians she has recruited over her long career. Those who purchased the album were invited to enter a competition to win a gold painted Fiat Punta car.
