About Johann Nepomuk Hummel

Mozart’s principal teacher, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, was also a keyboard prodigy of astounding ability. Born in Vienna in 1778, he embarked on a five-year concert tour of Europe at the age of 10. Returning to Vienna, he studied alongside Beethoven and succeeded Haydn as music director to the Esterházy family. He spent his final two decades as Kapellmeister in Weimar, which he developed into a major centre for the most modern music and culture. Much of his music has the piano at its core and includes 10 concertos, mainly in a Mozartian style, and a range of solo and chamber works; there are also Masses and operas but, strikingly, no symphonies. Melody and virtuosity were the guiding principles of his style, although later in life he felt he was being overtaken by the keyboard pyrotechnics of Liszt and the Romantics. His most famous work is the elegant “Trumpet Concerto”, which has remained in the repertoire while much of his other music has only recently been rediscovered.
