New York's Suicide was part of the mid/late-‘70s CBGB punk scene, although they actually predated it by several years having formed in 1970. Alan Vega and Martin Rev developed an approach more radical than punk, forsaking guitars and live drums for synthesizers and primitive drum machines. Inspired by Iggy Pop, Vega took a confrontational approach to live performance that brought danger to the stage. Though not as commercially successful as their peers, Suicide influenced all manner of electronic music for years to come, from industrial to synth-pop, techno and more.
