Roy Hargrove Essentials

Roy Hargrove Essentials

A warm-sounding virtuoso in the tradition of trumpeter Clifford Brown, former Young Lion Roy Hargrove demonstrated strength and polish on tunes like 1994's "Soppin' the Biscuit." He broke new ground a few years later with an innovative Cuban-fusion album, Habana, which includes the smoking "Afrodisia." Hargrove took on the Miles Davis role with Herbie Hancock, bringing his cool to a boil on "So What/Impressions." And he came solidly into his own with the 2008 LP Earfood, whose centerpiece, the pop-R&B hybrid "Strasbourg/St. Denis," guarantees jazz nirvana. Hargrove passed away in November 2018 at age 49.
