If fashion and music go hand in hand—and of course they do—then think of playlists like a wardrobe, personally curated and deeply reflective of the wearer’s lifestyle, outlook and more. This particular one shows the eclectic stylings of Grammy Award winner Lenny Kravitz, the musical director of the March issue of iconic fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar, which is producing a series of playlists with different musicians, available only on Apple Music. Here, the 56-year-old rock god highlights legendary cuts that inspired his own career, ranging from Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix to jazz icons like Miles Davis and Jimmy Scott. “I just want to be remembered as someone who expressed himself in every way imaginable. Music is oxygen for me,” Kravitz says. “I started with Duke Ellington’s ‘In a Sentimental Mood’ because one of my earliest memories is sitting on his lap while he played piano.” Kravitz’s sonically diverse playlist also includes David Bowie's “Rock ’N’ Roll Suicide” (“He opened up my mind and my spirit musically”) and “Body and Soul” by Bobby Short. “These are artists who made brilliant contributions to music,” Kravitz says. “True and beautiful expression comes from so many places.” With each issue of Harper’s Bazaar, we’ll launch a new playlist with picks by their latest musical director, so stay tuned.
