Though he died all too young at age 34 in 1939, drummer Chick Webb made a lasting contribution to the development of jazz. Coming to prominence while leading the house band at Harlem’s iconic Savoy Ballroom in the ’30s, the Baltimore native became widely known for his dynamic rhythmic instincts and concurrent delicate touch. He also recruited then-teenage Ella Fitzgerald, yielding some of her finest early moments (see the 1938 classic “A-Tisket, A-Tasket”). Webb’s legacy as an influential ambassador of jazz endures thanks to jittering gems like “I Got Rhythm”, which packs a percussion solo of head-spinning ingenuity.
