Founded by the late DJ Screw in the mid 1990s, the Screwed Up Click is a large collective of southside Houston rappers who embraced Screw’s haunting, psychedelic version of Dirty South hip-hop known as screw music. The click’s members built their reputations from appearances and freestyling on Screw’s countless locally released mixtapes. A handful of the S.U.C. members have met violent deaths (Fat Pat, Big Hawk, Big Mello) while others died of heart failure (Big Moe, DJ Screw himself), linked to the abuse of codeine cough syrup--a key element in the conception of screw music.
