Essential Albums
- Great American Songbook composers dominate this 2001 release from pianist and singer Diana Krall, in which slick string arrangements produce an unlikely, winning contrast with the seductively earthy grain of her voice (particularly in the low end of her range). Bossa nova touches add extra warmth to the Gershwin brothers' "'S Wonderful", and bassist Christian McBride’s spare but rhythmically secure playing (particularly on “Dancing In the Dark” and the title track) rounds out this casual pop-jazz gem.
- The jazz singer gets lush orchestral backup courtesy of Johnny Mandel.
- The Canadian singer-pianist’s celebrated fourth album.
- 2009

About Diana Krall
Diana Krall brings a deceptively casual air to her performances, a distinctive quality that obscures her undeniable chops as a singer and pianist. Along with her warm contralto, Krall’s unhurried elegance helps the Canadian—born in British Columbia in 1964—put an inimitable imprint on a wide range of song choices. These choices have included the Nat “King” Cole classics that filled her 1996 breakthrough All For You: A Dedication To the Nat King Cole Trio, Eagles and Elton John tracks on 2015’s Wallflower, and her own thoughtful collaborations with husband Elvis Costello on 2004’s The Girl In the Other Room. They’re all a testament to Krall’s ability to successfully find a place in several eras at once. Indeed, it was her ability to bring a new kind of cool to vintage styles that first earned Krall the admiration of legends like producer Tommy LiPuma, who became a regular collaborator in the wake of her beguiling 1993 debut Stepping Out. After forays into ‘20s and ‘30s jazz on 2012’s Glad Rag Doll and more contemporary songs on Wallflower, Krall made a triumphant return to the Great American Songbook on Love Is Here to Stay, an engaging collection of duets with her friend and former tourmate Tony Bennet. On 2020’s This Dream Of You, a moving collection of songs recorded with LiPuma before his death in 2017, Krall sounds as unruffled as ever—even as she assumes the mantle of a master musician.
