Pride 2022 (DJ Mix)

“This mix is for queer people who aren’t in love right now, who are in love with themselves, who are on a journey of self-love, who still remain hopeful about love,” Ariel Zetina tells Apple Music. The Chicago techno producer is all about “love is love” but notes that it’s almost too intrinsically connected to marriage equality. “It seems to only apply to queer people who are happily married and doesn’t really leave room for anything else,” says Zetina. With that in mind, this mix is all about all kinds of love, and it features plenty of her producer and vocalist friends along the way. One of Zetina’s favourite tracks on the mix is “(We Hate) Youth and Beauty” by Dirty Sanchez, a Los Angeles electroclash act fronted by drag queen Jackie Beat. “This represents everything I’m about,” she says, citing the 2006 track’s prescient lyrics: “Gay is finally so uncool/I can’t believe that I survived/I can’t believe I’m still alive/When everyone’s best friend’s a queer, it’s got to mean the end is near.” According to Zetina, that sentiment speaks even more to today than it did to its original era. “We are in the future,” she quips. And while Pride is a time for celebration, it’s also a time to reflect and remember those who we’ve lost. Zetina has dedicated this mix to Joy Beverly Bundles (aka TSPEANUTTBUTTERS and Pussy Baby), a trans woman and close friend who recently passed away. “Joy has been a staple in the queer electronic music scenes of Chicago, Atlanta and the woods of Tennessee,” shares Zetina. “Anyone who had a chance to witness her knows what I’m talking about. Very proud to call Joy one of my friends, and I can’t believe we lost her this year.”
