By the time singer Glenn Danzig formed his eponymous group in 1987 he was already an underground icon, having made his name as the frontman of legendary horror-punk bands the Misfits and Samhain. For his new act, he fused the slow-burning intensity of pre-eminent hard rockers like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple to a desert-fried doom-groove and let his own surprisingly soulful vocals do the rest. Though many band members have come and gone during the group's long lifespan, Danzig himself remains one of metal's most charismatic presences as he keeps on recording, touring and tirelessly invoking the beast.
