Los Muñequitos de Matanzas

About Los Muñequitos de Matanzas

After nearly a half century as one of Cuba's most popular rhumba bands, los Munequitos De Matanzas have been steadily making their presence felt in North America. Tours of the United States in 1992, 1996, 1998, and 1999 have established the group as one of Cuba's finest exports. An exciting troupe of dancers, drummers, and vocalists, los Munequintos De Matanzas were conceived by young musicians who began beating a rhythm on dishes and bottles while listening to a song by Arsenio Rodriguez in a bar in Barrio Marina, Matanzas, Cuba. The group remains rooted in the Abakwa (Efik/Efo) traditions of Africa. Los Munequintos De Matanzas are led by general director, dancer, and guagua player Diosdado Ramos Cruz and musical director; composer; and quinto, cajon, Iya bata, and percussion player Jesus Alfonso Miro. ~ Craig Harris
