About Clara Ward
Leader of the first gospel group to crossover to pop on a grand scale (in her later years, she had no qualms about appearing in godless Las Vegas), Clara Ward was an accomplished pianist and arranger, and a singer with one of the most powerful voices in the genre. In the 1950s, her group the Clara Ward singers was the toast of the gospel world and beyond, appearing at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival and other unconventional venues for gospel.
