There’s no shortage of lost and lonesome folk troubadours, but few have the choirboy voice of Carter Tanton. The U.S. singer’s breathy lilt is an otherworldly instrument, soaring over uncluttered acoustic songs concerned with love and loss. Written in the wake of a failing relationship, Jettison the Valley unites pastoral folk with moody indie-pop: see the lush “Fresh Faced Claire”, gorgeous opener “Twentynine Palms”, featuring Sharon Van Etten, and the broken-hearted haunting of “Through the Garden Gates”. It’s quiet music for hard times.
