Startling vocals elevate these indie-rock anthems above the stadium-chasing pack. It’s easy to be ham-fisted when making emotive, arena-ready rock but Australia’s The Temper Trap avoid that pitfall with a measured touch that manifests itself best in the shimmering, hypnotic riff on “Sweet Disposition” and the dancefloor echoes beneath “Science of Fear”’s thrusting riffs. Moreover, they’re fronted by a singer of rare quality. Dougy Mandagi’s gliding falsetto brings intimacy to all the sunburst choruses and more emotional depth than there should be to “Sweet Disposition”’s booty call of “Stay there, ’cos I’ll be coming over.”
