There’s more than a slight whiff of patchouli in the air on The Coral’s seventh album as the prolific Merseyside outfit (without guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones for the first time) foreground the 1970s Pacific Coast psychedelia that’s always been a key cog in their peculiar machine. The mature, sun-baked hits come thick and fast. “Roving Jewel” is a galloping top-down anthem, “North Parade” fizzes with squalling feedback and nimble fretwork and “1000 Years” may just be the spectral, sumptuous sound of a band hitting their peak—and then levitating a few inches higher.
