If Jonathan McReynolds were a secular artist, his throwback sound would fit right in with the neo-soul crowd. A hit like 2020’s “Movin’ On” is an absolute joy: tastefully crafted gospel that layers classic Stevie Wonder-style hooks and ’70s organ licks atop a bubbling funk groove. In addition to boasting impeccable musicianship (the Chicagoan plays at least three instruments and teaches music at the collegiate level), he’s a sympathetic composer.
