Stylistically peripatetic Yusef Lateef helped make flute a bona fide jazz instrument, melding lyric melody with remarkably agile rhythmic elasticity. In the ‘60s he pushed international influences into the jazz fold, adding Indian instruments like the shehnai. But his foundation was purely in jazz, whether in the exploratory modes investigated on “Medula Sonata,” the chilled-out funk fusion of “Nubian Lady,” or the sleek blues in “The Dreamer.”
