Voices of Change: Rich Kidd
“My playlist represents the past, present, and future of Canadian hip-hop and R&B. These artists influenced me, inspired me, surprised me, and also their music is just so damn good that people have to hear it. Also the majority of the artists on this playlist have been participants in musical youth programs such as Fresh Arts and The Remix Project. ‘Ol' Time Killin'’ by Kardinal Offishall is a top 5 Canadian song of all time to me. I remember seeing the music video and being amazed at the representation of Black faces, flags of different Caribbean nations, and clothing styles. It showed me that you don't have to copy American styles or trends to make meaningful music. Just be you. ‘Hate’ by Idman is a song I love because of its vulnerability. It's authentic and raw. It's the things you want to say but don't because everyone wants to play it cool. The song reminds me that I got to be honest with myself and my feelings.” —Rich Kidd
