Village People Essentials

The Village People receive an abundance of attention for their campy stagewear, but the group became disco legends just as much for their indelible songs and their open embrace of queer lifestyles. Led by songwriter Victor Willis (who was known to dress as a naval officer), the quintet dominated late-’70s dance floors and disco charts with hits such as the aspirational “Macho Man” and the upbeat “San Francisco (You’ve Got Me)” and “In the Navy.” And although “Y.M.C.A.” has become a sporting-event perennial, the song also serves as a celebration of how the organization then was a haven for the disenfranchised.
