In 1956, jazz producer Norman Granz made his third attempt at founding a successful jazz label, and the third time turned out to be the charm. Verve was initially a showcase for Ella Fitzgerald, who he was managing at the time, but everyone from Stan Getz to Count Basie made landmark albums for the label.
