Valaire Essentials

Valaire's upbeat funk knows few borders: The Québécois quintet—known as Misteur Valaire until 2016—are bluesy and boisterous on the Southern-fried "Don't Get Là," balancing squealing harmonica with hard rock guitars. "Apata Palace," recorded in New Orleans, sets a pair of African singers against staccato beats and heavy horns, while "Known by Sight" sends Milk & Bone's vocal harmonies soaring over sleek electro-pop to dizzying effect, and "Whisky Dew" hints at tropical EDM. "It's All Good," a total curveball, packs widescreen drama into jazz drumming and classical piano.
