Starting in the ‘40s, composer/ethnomusicologist Violeta Parra ushered in a new wave of Chilean folk music known as Nueva Canción. Los Jaivas deliver a prog-rock take on “Arauco Tiene una Pena,” and Paz Court's reading of “Ausencia” entrances with eerie simplicity. Javiera y Los Imposibles' “Rin del Angelito” presses Parra's rhythms into something resembling a Radiohead song, while Quilapayún's “La Carta” captures her traditionally folky mood.
