In the hands of These New Puritans, music twists into compelling new forms, underlined with martial drums, pastoral woodwind ensembles, and sardonic whispers. Jack Barnett murmurs his introspective chamber song on 2013's “Fragment Two,” puts ghostly samples against minimalist piano on “This Guy's In Love With You,” and then rants and spits the fiery indie disco of “Elvis.” Even at their most conventional—the dramatic choral pop of “Into the Fire” and the jittery tattoo of “Fire-Power”—there's an undercurrent of otherness that suggests a refusal to play by the normal rules.
