The Works opens this week with Yeol Eum Son’s live performance of a charmingly beautiful piece of Baroque pastiche by the Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha. Combining elements of Scarlatti with the sort of modern glance at the 18th century that Grieg accomplishes in his Holberg Suite, the Sonata Antigua is a filigree work, full of delicate ornaments and delicious harmonic progressions. Although internationally acclaimed as a pianist, Alicia de Larrocha is almost entirely unknown as a composer, as a result of keeping her numerous works from public attention. “De Larrocha composed almost purely for the pleasure of writing,” Yeol Eum Son tells Apple Music Classical, “but she didn’t expect them at all to be played publicly. This piece is very pristine, and it reminds me a lot of de Larrocha’s playing which I’ve heard from numerous recordings.” The Works features the best of the very latest classical releases. We regularly update this playlist, so if you find a piece of music or a performance you particularly love, don’t forget to add it to your library.
