Though regarded as pioneering figures in pop-punk, California's The Vandals actually delivered much heavier material than the more popular bands that followed in their wake. The group emerged from the same West Coast hardcore scene that spawned Black Flag in the '80s, but their tongue-in-cheek lyrics and melodic hooks put them in league with The Dickies. The Warped Tour favourites experienced an upswing in the '90s thanks to frequent name checks by the second wave of pop-punk acts like NOFX. This interest generated a slew of LPs that showed their signature sense of humour remained intact.
