The Rise of Island Records

Chris Blackwell's Island label led a double life. On one hand it was the label that did the most to popularize reggae outside of Jamaica, starting with its first releases by The Maytals and Desmond Dekker, and continuing with the worldwide success of Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff. Meanwhile it explored the connection of English folk and progressive rock, via Nick Drake, John Martyn, and Traffic.
