The Halluci Nation Essentials

Since their late-2000s formation as the DJ crew for an Indigenous club night in Ottawa, The Halluci Nation (formerly known as A Tribe Called Red) have been fusing festival-ready EDM with ancient First Nation rituals, spawning a singular style best described by their 2012 single “Electric Pow Pow Drum.” But on their landmark 2016 release, We Are the Halluci Nation, ATCR’s genre-blurring adventurism is matched by an equally restless activist voice (with guest Yasiin Bey—a.k.a. Mos Def—spitting anti-nationalist fire on the boom-bapped chant “R.E.D.”). The band’s 2020 single “Land Back” combats colonialism with stuttering percussion, buzzing synths, and celebratory incantations.
