For Montreal-based The Franklin Electric, a sigh is more powerful than a shout. The band emerged in 2013, cutting through the handclaps and hollers of brasher indie-folk collectives with pastel-hued, piano-led compositions that command you to lean closer. Lead singer/songwriter Jon Matte has honed his group’s elegant aesthetic with the deliberate, slow-burning approach that distinguishes each of their songs. Their earliest tunes exude a loose-limbed charm; later tracks fold in gauzy synth washes or a crisp snare. In other moments, Matte strips everything away, leaving only his plaintive voice and the electrifying ripple of a fingerpicked guitar.
