The Brian Jonestown Massacre Essentials

The Brian Jonestown Massacre Essentials

The Brian Jonestown Massacre's history is turbulent, rife with onstage fisticuffs and lineup changes, but mastermind Anton Newcombe has never wavered in his commitment to exploring every shade of psychedelia in the kaleidoscope. During a prolific mid-'90s stretch, Newcombe and co. tackled jangly garage rock (“Straight Up and Down”), Velvets-style rumbles (“Got My Mind on You”), and post-shoegaze riffs on the Stones (“Wisdom”), injecting each with their own subversive spirit. On later records, Newcombe's myriad influences have coalesced into tremolo-drenched reveries (“Pish”) and droning, Middle Eastern–tinged odysseys (“What You Isn't”).
