As the proprietor of Montreal's Breakglass Studios, Jace Lasek has produced albums by many of the city's indie luminaries. But since the early '00s, he and wife/bassist Olga Goreas have fused Beach Boys harmonies and stormy, Spiritualized-sized psychedelia as The Besnard Lakes. The band can take multiple routes to the same interstellar destination: Where “Devastation” uses sludge-metal riffage to thrust its sweetly cooed chorus skyward, “Golden Lion” floats atop gentle waves of lysergic jangle and helium-high hooks. But as “And This Is What We Call Progress” shows, the Besnards can also cut through the gauzy shimmer with post-punk urgency.
