Television Essentials

Though they were key instigators of the mid-‘70s CBGB scene, Television possessed the sort of skill and ambition that distinguished them from the 1-2-3-4 roar of their peers. Their debut single, “Little Johnny Jewel,” was post-punk before punk was even a thing, with Tom Verlaine's twitchy vocals and fretboard contortions anchored by a pinpricked riff and taut groove. And on 1977's “Marquee Moon,” they elevated the extended guitar solo into something lyrical and profound. After a 14-year break, Television resurfaced in 1992 with gleaming gems like “1880 or So” that fit right in with the indie rock of the day.
