Sunnyboys Essentials

Sunnyboys may not have had the longest initial lifespan, but their legacy has only grown in the decades since. That’s thanks in large part to vocalist and lead guitarist Jeremy Oxley’s wiry hooks and sharp emotional shorthand on lovesick anthems like 1981’s “Alone with You,” which added an anxious edge to bright, ringing power pop. The Sydney band’s self-titled debut album—including that early calling card—was produced by Australian pub rock veteran Lobby Loyde, who captured both their sheer immediacy and Oxley’s thoughtful lyrics on “Happy Man” and “My Only Friend,” among others. Oxley would further reflect upon his mental health on 1982’s “You Need a Friend” and 1983’s more outwardly moody “Show Me Some Discipline,” each stubbornly catchy at the same time. Diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 22, Oxley wrapped up the band in 1984, although periodic reunions followed in subsequent years. An expanded version of Sunnyboys’ self-titled first EP arrived in 2019 to mark the band’s 40th anniversary, with formative tunes like “Love to Rule” reminding us how much Oxley was baring his soul all along.
