

Since the ‘80s alto saxophonist Steve Coleman has effectively fused bebop phrasing to a wide array of rhythms, whether hip-hop or Cuban grooves, but there's more to his game. His jazz bona fides are clear from his sultry blowing with vocal legend Abbey Lincoln on “Love What You're Doin' Down There,” and he's equally at home zigzagging with The Roots on “Datskat.” On “Tempest” he builds delicious tension against a classical string section.
