This South African ensemble debuted in 2002 with the album Voices From Heaven—and you won't find a better example of truth in advertising. But even though its collective singing is powerful enough to part the skies, Soweto Gospel Choir is a refreshingly earthbound entity. Whether putting a funky twist on classic gospel spirituals, communing with Western pop royalty like Jennifer Hudson and Robert Plant, or covering the odd '80s pop hit, they serve up sacred music with a healthy side of sacrilege.
