Selects: Chase & Status

While the title of Chase & Status’ sixth album, What Came Before, might suggest a desire for the London duo to look back on their two decades spent at the centre of the global drum ’n’ bass scene, it’s just as much a line demarcating then and now. Across 13 tracks, Saul “Chase” Milton and Will “Status” Kennard highlight the sounds upon which they built their reputation (jungle, dubstep, UK garage, a bit of grime and hip-hop) while continuing to broaden them with a diverse lineup of vocal collaborators. Their associated Selects playlist—in which DJs and producers showcase their favourite tracks of any given moment—is a similarly wide-ranging survey. “Fundamentally, this is a playlist of our influences for the record, old and new,” Milton tells Apple Music. "We’ve also included some of the tracks from our collaborators so you can hear for yourself what makes them so special.” Check out all the duo’s picks, including a few of Milton’s standouts, which he talks about below. Pip Millett, “Hard Life” “Beautiful song, nostalgic beat, and great writing—really shows off how good Pip is.” The Prodigy, “Charly” “This song really needs little introduction. The Prodigy have been our biggest influence through our career and we still draw inspiration from them today. ‘Charly’ was groundbreaking when it first came out in 1992 and it still sounds exciting in 2022.” Souls of Mischief, “93 'Til Infinity” “Listening to this takes us back to an exciting time of falling in love with music. A timeless track that you have to have in your playlist.”
