Selects: Baba Stiltz

Stockholm-based singer, songwriter, and producer Baba Stiltz is the kind of artist who is impossible to pin down. As a teenager, under the alias Mrs. Qeada, he helped push the Nordic sound of skweee to electronic music’s vanguard. Soon after, he began putting out slow-motion house abstractions on Studio Barnhus and Unknown to the Unknown, and then morphed those sounds with his own vocals—sometimes in earnest, sometimes comically not in earnest. On his 2023 album Paid Testimony, he turned his attention to rough-hewn folk and off-kilter soft rock, only further confounding anyone who might dare predict where he goes next. (Did we mention that he won a Guldbagge Award—Sweden’s version of an Oscar—for Best Original Score for the 2023 film Shame on Dry Land?) It’s that wild range that also defines Stiltz’s Selects—the playlist in which the world’s best DJs and producers share their favourite tracks of the moment. “With this playlist, I have tried to incorporate all the disparate yet connected styles that inform my way of relating to and composing music,” he tells Apple Music. “The songs are very much rooted in guitar and songwriting but also the shapeless sonics of experimental and intentionality of classical composition.” The ground covered here involves atmospheric singer-songwriters such as Grouper and Julie Doiron, Lou Reed and Willie Nelson in their folkier incarnations, guitar experimenters like Fred Frith, John Fahey, and Sonic Youth, and plenty more.
