Savage Garden’s soft, vulnerable pop became downright ubiquitous in the late ’90s, after the Brisbane duo of singer Darren Hayes and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Jones issued their self-titled debut in 1997. Savage Garden became a multiplatinum smash in several countries and earned a record 10 ARIAs. And it lives on today, thanks to blockbuster ballads like “Truly Madly Deeply” and the karaoke-ready “To the Moon & Back.” The pair’s follow-up (and swan song), 1999’s Affirmation proved considerably darker in tone, with Hayes dwelling on his divorce. “I was writing lyrics that were about the loss of my marriage; a lot of the content I was writing was definitely wounded,” he tells Apple Music. “It was the other side of love and understanding about the fragility of relationships.” The album’s most enduring moment is the dreamy title track, whose lyrics foreshadowed Hayes’ coming out—and subtly opened the doors for others.
