R&B at the Rock Show: Indie Gets Soulful

Indie rockers have long honored American R&B and soul. In the early '80s, U.K. genre-benders like The Style Council, Orange Juice, and Scritti Politti took their love of soul to commercial heights. During the Britpop and grunge years, outsiders like Tindersticks and Beck kept things soulful, and later, electronic combos like Hot Chip and Junior Boys embraced an indie-meets-R&B renaissance.
